Should Animals Be Used For Sports - 1951 Words

Sports that use animals include racing, fighting, and hunting. Some of the most common animals in sports are horses, dogs, and roosters. Since the days of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, animals have been used in sports. Some people believe that using animals in sports is cruel, while others say animals enjoy the healthy competition as much as humans do (Should Animals). Is there a convincing reason to prove that animals should be used in sports? Or is there too much evidence against the practice? A problem with the use of animals in sports is that the animals can sometimes be abused or mistreated. Trainers may use performance-enhancing drugs (also known as PEDs) to ensure the performance quality of the animals. In the horse industry, 170,000 race horses generate more than 300,000 jobs. Roughly 34% of horse owners have a househ old income of less than $50,000 and 28% have an annual income of over $100,000 (National Economic). Those involved in the greyhound racing industry claim that the greyhounds are not harmed in the sport of racing. Greyhounds are sight-hounds and thus chase the lure by instinct, just as they would anything that moves. The chase itself is a reward for the greyhound (The National Greyhound). They exhibit excitement prior to race time which concludes why racing is beneficial to the animals involved. The first few sources used such as The National Greyhound Association and the source from PETA appear credible and informational. The National Greyhound Association gives clear information on the purpose of the association and does show a bias on the issue of greyhounds being used for racing. PETA is biased on the issue of animals being used for information but the information given gives a surplus of knowledge of numerous worldwide problems with animals being used in sports.
